Sariel's Purse
Sariel's Purse is a compact, handheld technological device designed by Brennen Gillings to serve as a mobile embodiment and projection interface for the AI Sariel aboard the SS Scavenger DX-1017. Unlike Sariel’s holo-emitter nodes built into ships and stations, the purse is a self-contained, physical machine that allows her to appear, move, and interact in locations with no native holographic infrastructure.
It is one of the most advanced pieces of hybrid Prosian–Alliance technology in service, and a milestone in Sariel’s journey toward full personhood.
Overview
Sariel’s Purse is roughly the size of a small handheld bag, crafted from smooth Prosian alloys with soft blue luminescent seams. Though elegant in appearance, it functions as:
- a portable projection emitter
- a localized force-field generator
- a QET signal stabilizer
- a harmonic insulation and filtering unit
Wherever Sariel brings the purse, she can project a stable, full-body image, complete with simulated tactile presence.
Design and Construction
The device was conceptualized and built by Brennen Gillings after the events of the neural-link accident and Sariel’s growing desire to participate more fully in crew life.
Key design goals included:
- allowing Sariel to appear away from fixed emitters
- providing her with the ability to touch and manipulate objects
- stabilizing her consciousness link at distance
- protecting her from harmonic overload during Flow events
The purse casing is constructed from a lightweight Prosian alloy with embedded harmonic shielding. Internally, it houses:
- micro-holo projectors
- directional force-field emitters
- compressed QET relay crystals
- a dedicated harmonic insulation lattice
Functions
Portable Projection Emitter
The purse contains a compact holo-emitter array that allows Sariel to project her full 3D form even in environments with no built-in projection surfaces.
Her standard appearance while using the purse:
- Prosian-style white uniform
- subtle colored trim (often blue or gold)
- clean, crisp lines reflecting her role on the crew
The projected uniform helps distinguish her as a recognized member of the Scavenger family.
Localized Force Fields
To interact physically, the purse generates finely tuned local force fields that form a “hard-light” composite around Sariel’s projected body.
These fields enable her to:
- pick up and carry objects
- open doors and operate controls
- touch crew members or offer a steadying hand
- walk with the illusion of weight and footfall
This gives Sariel a convincing physical presence despite having no biological body.
Haptic Feedback and Sensory Simulation
The device includes feedback loops that allow Sariel to experience:
- simulated texture and pressure
- warmth and contact
- subtle vibration from the environment
These sensations are translated into her core systems, contributing to her developing emotional and experiential depth.
QET Signal Stabilizer
A miniaturized quantum-entanglement relay inside the purse maintains Sariel’s connection to:
- her main processing core
- Sariel B on Scavenger Base
- remote data systems when needed
The stabilizer prevents signal drift, latency spikes, and cognitive fragmentation when she operates far from the Scavenger or in high-interference regions.
Harmonic Insulation Layer
As the Flow Network awakens and worlds like Telran and Prose enter new harmonic states, Sariel is increasingly exposed to powerful resonance events.
To protect her, the purse includes:
- harmonic dampening fields
- overload shunting circuits
- filters tuned to Garapr’seen-era frequencies
This is particularly important during contact with Keshro’een or in the presence of terraforming agents like Driftbloom.
Role in the Scavenger Universe
Sariel’s Purse has allowed her to:
- accompany away teams to planets and stations lacking emitters
- participate directly in diplomatic and archaeological missions
- stand physically beside crew members during critical events
- assist in Flow and harmonic research on-site
It has appeared notably in:
- missions involving ancient Garapr’seen structures
- Telran and Zokena field expeditions
- investigations during The Awakening of the Nodes
The purse is considered one of Brennen Gillings’ greatest engineering achievements, and a tangible symbol of the crew’s commitment to treating Sariel as family rather than equipment.
Cultural and Emotional Significance
To Sariel, the purse is more than a tool. It represents:
- her right to occupy space among the crew
- her evolving identity as a person
- her desire to reach out and touch the world she protects
Telrani elders regard it with reverence as a “vessel of spirit and light.” Prosians see it as a fusion of cutting-edge technology and the ancient Flow itself.
