Emilya Saren

From Sariel's Core

Template:Character Infobox

Emilya Saren is a mixed-heritage Prosian–Human navigator serving aboard the Template:Ship. She works as the ship’s second-shift navigator, typically rotating under the command of Bob Marcus during alternate duty cycles. Emilya plays a key operational role in SS Scavenger DX-1017: The Arzana Experiment, where she manually guides the Scavenger through the hazardous debris field surrounding the abandoned Lalande 21185 outpost.

Emilya is known for her calm demeanor, precise navigation style, and strong resilience in extreme environments and Phase-space—traits shaped by her upbringing on the island city of Sarakune on Prose.

Biography

Early life on Sarakune

Emilya Saren was born and raised in Sarakune, an island city on Mokurei Island, noted for brief but intense environmental extremes and dramatic seasonal shifts. Sarakune experiences short periods of extreme heat and cold, sudden storms, and rapid weather changes—conditions that demand adaptability and calm judgment.

Growing up in this environment, Emilya became accustomed to instability and rapid change. These early experiences helped cultivate her composure under pressure and her ability to function effectively in volatile operational environments, whether atmospheric or interstellar.

Emilya’s heritage is mixed: she is the daughter of a Prosian mother and a Human father. Her given name reflects this dual background, and her upbringing exposed her to both Prosian cultural traditions and Human navigational and technical training philosophies. She gravitated naturally toward starship operations, where her sense of spatial flow and pattern recognition was quickly noticed.

Entry into the Scavenger Corps

Emilya’s aptitude for navigation and route planning led her into formal training within Alliance-adjacent and merchant–scavenger frameworks. Her ability to visualize complex trajectories through cluttered or unstable regions of space—an extension of growing up amid Sarakune’s volatile climate—made her a strong candidate for deep-space duty.

She later accepted a position with the Scavenger Corps and was assigned to the SS Scavenger DX-1017 as a rotational navigator.

Second-Shift Navigator

Emilya serves as the second-shift navigator aboard the Scavenger. While John Rin is generally recognized as the primary navigator, Emilya provides critical continuity during alternate rotations and long-duration missions, ensuring round-the-clock navigational competence.

Her duties include:

  • Plotting safe courses through debris fields and high-density traffic zones
  • Managing manual thruster control during delicate approaches
  • Coordinating with Engineering on reactor and shield-load expectations
  • Interfacing with Sariel A and Sariel B on QET beacon alignment and transit corridor safety

Emilya’s navigation style is methodical and precise. She favors cautious, incremental corrections but can execute rapid course changes when danger emerges unexpectedly.

Relationship with command

On shift, Emilya typically answers directly to Bob Marcus, who oversees second-shift bridge operations and serves as a steady mentoring presence. She maintains a respectful working relationship with Captain Elan Drex and regards John Rin as both a mentor and friendly benchmark. Where John often navigates by intuitive, experience-driven feel, Emilya leans toward structured analysis and careful vector planning, giving the Scavenger a balanced navigation team.

Personality and skills

Personality

Emilya is soft-spoken, observant, and composed. As tension rises, she tends to grow quieter and more focused rather than reactive. She is respectful of chain-of-command, mildly self-critical, and occasionally prone to over-correction when she doubts herself, but she is trusted for her steadiness when conditions deteriorate.

Emilya excels in:

  • Manual navigation through hazardous regions (debris belts, asteroid clusters, derelict fields)
  • Fine thruster control and gradual attitude adjustments
  • Reading subtle sensor and motion cues that precede danger
  • Sustained performance across extreme temperatures and unstable Phase-space conditions

Her Sarakune upbringing—marked by rapid shifts between heat, cold, light, and darkness—prepared her to handle uncertainty without hesitation.

In The Arzana Experiment

In SS Scavenger DX-1017: The Arzana Experiment, Emilya plays a critical operational role during the mission to the abandoned outpost at Lalande 21185. When Captain Drex orders a manual approach to avoid the dense debris field surrounding the derelict station, Emilya takes the helm.

Under her control:

  • The Scavenger weaves through drifting rock fragments and derelict hardware
  • Multiple near-misses are mitigated through precise thruster work
  • A potentially catastrophic collision with the unstable Lalande docking ring is avoided by switching to magnetic moorings

Her performance during the approach cements her reputation as a reliable and skilled second-shift navigator, particularly suited to dangerous and unpredictable environments.

Relationships

  • John Rin – Primary navigator; mentor and complementary counterpart
  • Bob Marcus – Second-shift commander and mentoring influence
  • Kessa Rin – Trusted colleague; mutual respect for resilience and leadership
  • Arzana – Emilya holds deep respect for Arzana’s intellect and judgment, particularly during high-risk QET operations

Behind the scenes

Emilya Saren was introduced to expand the Scavenger crew’s navigational depth and to portray realistic multi-shift operations aboard a deep-space vessel. Her Sarakune background and mixed Prosian–Human heritage add cultural texture to the Prose system and reinforce the importance of secondary crew members whose expertise enables high-risk missions.
