John Rin (born John Varas, Annuli 3349) is a Terran-born human officer serving aboard the SS Scavenger DX-1017.

Originally a **Security Division enlistee**, John left the Alliance after growing disenchanted with its bureaucracy and lack of compassion. He worked as a **mechanic at the Prosian orbital yards**, where fate brought him into contact with **Kessa Rin**, who was recruiting crew for the newly forming Scavenger. Impressed by his mechanical insight, Kessa hired him on the spot—launching the partnership that would define both their lives.

Early Life

John Varas was raised on **Earth**, in the Terran Alliance’s North American sector. He joined the **Alliance Security Division** in his early twenties, serving aboard patrol and escort vessels. Though competent, he disliked the rigid hierarchy and political detachment that often placed protocol above people. After his enlistment term ended, he sought honest work among the shipyards orbiting Prose, repairing freighter thrusters and auxiliary systems.

It was there that **Kessa Rin**—assembling a mixed human–Prosian crew for Captain Elan Drex’s reconstruction project—met him. Recognizing both his skill and sincerity, she persuaded Drex to take him aboard as a general mechanic. John later said of that meeting: > “She looked past the grease on my hands and saw the purpose still hiding under it.”

The Rebuilding of the Scavenger

Once hired, John assisted **Chief Engineer Vek Tollin** with structural assembly and wiring of hybrid systems—often working double shifts to meet calibration deadlines. He helped align the secondary hull frame and plasma conduits connecting the salvaged Alliance and Prosian sections, earning Tollin’s respect. Drex would later note in his logs that John “repaired as though redemption were part of the blueprint.”

During these early months, John’s practical grounding complemented Kessa’s harmonic precision, laying the foundation for both a professional and personal bond.

Service aboard the Scavenger

When the ship launched, John was officially listed as **Security Officer**, responsible for shipboard safety and tactical readiness. However, his mechanical background and intuitive sense of system balance quickly drew him into bridge operations. He was later promoted to **Navigation Officer**, retraining under Tollin in **phase-lane mapping** and **harmonic trajectory calibration**. His work proved crucial in stabilizing travel through Nilita’fen—the Flow of Light—during long-range missions.

Marriage and Cultural Transition

Over time, John’s collaboration with **Kessa Rin** deepened into love. During the return voyage from Altair, **Kessa proposed** in accordance with Prosian matriarchal tradition. Upon their marriage, John adopted her surname, becoming **John Rin**, honoring Prosian custom where family lineage follows the wife’s name. He explained his decision simply: > “I didn’t give up a name. I joined one.”

Their marriage became an enduring symbol of human–Prosian harmony within the Scavenger Fleet.

Later Career

As Navigation Officer, John coordinated phase-lane survey missions and assisted Admiral Elan Drex with fleet-route planning. He began preparing for the **Captain’s Exam**, intending to command a Scavenger-class humanitarian vessel. His leadership notes reflect humility and conviction: > “Command isn’t ownership. It’s stewardship of every life the Flow places in your care.”

Personality

John Rin is pragmatic, introspective, and quietly loyal. He brings a craftsman’s precision to navigation, seeing every plotted course as an act of creation. Crewmates describe him as the bridge’s moral compass—calm, steadfast, and deeply respectful of Prosian tradition.

Quotes

> “She looked past the grease on my hands and saw the purpose still hiding under it.” > “Every coordinate is a promise to return.” > “Navigation is trust between what we see and what we believe.”

Legacy

John Rin represents the synthesis of Earth’s practicality and Prose’s philosophy. From mechanic to navigator, from Varas to Rin, his journey mirrors the rebirth of the Scavenger itself—proof that renewal begins when one chooses purpose over pride. His career inspired later Alliance–Prosian exchange programs promoting cross-cultural training among fleet officers.
