Z Scale - Interstellar Travel Velocity
Z-Scale (Interstellar Travel Velocity)
Canonical propulsion velocity standard of the SS Scavenger Universe
The Z-Scale is the standard system used to describe interstellar travel velocity within the SS Scavenger DX-1017 Universe. It replaces the informal and culturally ambiguous term “warp factor” with a mathematically defined, time-based scale grounded in Prosian exploration history.
The scale is named after the Prosian explorer Clen Zarkine, whose early deep-space expeditions established the benchmark route between Prose and Altair.
Definition
Z-Scale velocity is defined by the time required for a vessel to travel between the Prosian homeworld Prose and Altair Station under stable Phase Drive conditions.
- Z1 = 60 days (Prose → Altair)
- Each successive Z-level halves the travel time
The scale is exponential rather than linear.
Z-Scale Values
| Z-Value | Travel Time (Prose → Altair) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Z1 | 60 days | Baseline historical reference |
| Z2 | 30 days | Early commercial Phase drives |
| Z3 | 15 days | Common Alliance freight velocity |
| Z4 | 7.5 days | Advanced civilian vessels |
| Z5 | 3.75 days | Typical maximum for Scavenger-class ships |
| Z6 | 1.875 days | Experimental military drives |
| Z7 | ~22 hours | Rare, unstable under long durations |
| Z8 | ~11 hours | Alliance carrier-class prototype range |
Operational Limits
Most independent and exploration vessels—including the SS Scavenger DX-1017—operate safely at or below Z5. Higher Z-levels introduce increasing risks:
- Phase field instability
- Navigation drift
- Harmonic stress on crew and AI systems
- Increased detection probability
Sustained operation above Z5 requires reinforced Phase containment and advanced harmonic stabilization.
Alliance Developments
The Alliance has begun testing a new capital ship, the AS Alliance, designed to reach a maximum velocity of Z8.
This development is not yet public knowledge but has become a subject of widespread speculation within fleet and station communities, particularly at Altair Station.
The AS Alliance is reported to carry:
- 14 Phase-capable shuttles
- 75 non-Phase fighters
- Mark 3 Regenerative Plasma Weapons
Its arrival at Altair Station is expected to mark a significant shift in Alliance strategic mobility.
Cultural Significance
Among Prosians, the Z-Scale is more than a technical measure—it represents continuity with early exploration traditions. Naming the scale after Clen Zarkine reflects Prosian values emphasizing discovery, patience, and measured expansion rather than raw speed.
Pilots often refer to velocity simply by stating a Z-value:
- “We’ll cruise at Z4.”
- “Pushing past Z5 is reckless.”
Comparison to Other Systems
Unlike fictional warp scales used in other universes, Z-Scale is:
- Time-based
- Exponentially defined
- Route-anchored
- Culturally contextualized
This makes Z-Scale both scientifically consistent and narratively grounded.
Canon Status
The Z-Scale is fully canonical across all stories within the SS Scavenger DX-1017 Universe and associated series, including Alliance Command.
