Prosian Calendar

From Sariel's Core

Template:Infobox calendar

The Prosian Calendar is a **13-month lunisolar system** developed during the early **Unification of Prose (Annuli 0000)**. Each month, called a Kastani (plural: *Kastanua*), is named for celestial events linked to the twin moons **Kastan** and **Liera**. The calendar measures **338 days** per year (known as an *Annuli*) and follows a **seven-day week**, balancing ritual observance, agriculture, and lunar motion.

The Prosian Calendar defines nearly all aspects of Prosian culture—from harvest cycles and engineering maintenance schedules to sacred observances such as the Jenek Ezeel.

Structure

The Prosian year, or **Annuli**, consists of 13 Kastani months. Most Kastani have 26 or 28 days, except for the sacred first month **Tulani**, which has only six.

No. Kastani (Month) Days Notes / Cultural Associations
1 Tulani 6 The short **sacred month** marking the flooding of the River Denek; deposits fertile soil for planting. Considered a period of gratitude and cleansing.
2 Zarkine 26 Early planting and renewal; trade routes reopen.
3 Tarwine 28 Growth season begins; strong river currents and mild weather.
4 Karfun 28 Associated with craftsmanship and restoration; often a time for engineering projects.
5 Leirati 28 Named for the moon **Liera**, which partially eclipses the sun during this Kastani; a time for reflection on light and shadow.
6 Mevoon 28 A period of travel and construction; weather stable across most regions of Prose.
7 Jenekti 28 The **season of reflection**; during this Kastani, the Prosian people observe the sacred Jenek Ezeel on Jenekti 15.
8 Benekedi 28 Late-summer harvests; social festivals and reunions.
9 Narosi 28 Season of preparation; maritime and river transport strongest under twin-moon alignment.
10 Larokosi 28 Time of **Laroko fruit harvest**; associated with family gatherings and community feasts.
11 Karstanoon 28 The moon **Kastan** often causes an eclipse during this month; a time of quiet observation.
12 Centati 28 Closing of trade cycles; storage and record keeping.
13 Denekta 26 Named for the River Denek; when **Kastan** and **Liera** approach one another, the Denek often floods—signaling both ending and renewal of the Annuli.

→ **Total days per Annuli:** 338

Time Units

The Prosian measurement of time follows harmonic divisions derived from river currents and lunar resonance.

Prosian Term English Equivalent Plural Notes
Kaset Day *Kasetua* Basic daily cycle; seven-day week.
Kuseen Hour *Kuseenua* 24 Kuseen per Kaset.
Keneet Minute *Keneetu* 60 Keneet per Kuseen.
Keet Moment Smallest measurable interval; roughly 1.5 Earth seconds.

Naming and Cultural Notes

  • The term **Kastani** derives from the moon *Kastan*, which governs tidal and agricultural rhythms.
  • Prosians use *Annuli* for “year” and still refer to months as “Kastani” even in Alliance communications.
  • Humans aboard Prosian ships often use both systems interchangeably (e.g., “Kastani 5, Leirati 10th”).
  • **1st of Leirati** is celebrated as **Seed Day**, marking the symbolic beginning of agricultural renewal.

Ritual and Seasonal Observances

  • **Tulani (Kastani 1)** – Sacred flooding of Denek; rituals of fertility and gratitude.
  • **Jenekti 15** – **Jenek Ezeel**, the great ceremony of mental and spiritual cleansing.
  • **Larokosi 10–18** – Harvest of Laroko fruit and Terget infusion festivals.
  • **Denekta 24–26** – “Days of the Rising Waters,” commemorating the year’s end.

Historical Origins

The calendar was formalized under **Councilwoman Zaroneth** during the **First Council of Prose (Annuli 0000)**, replacing the fractured regional systems used by the Seven Tribes. The Council standardized week lengths and lunar tracking, using the synchronized cycles of **Kastan** and **Liera** as temporal anchors.

The system was adopted throughout the planet within two generations, serving as both a **scientific and cultural unifier** of Prosian society.

Use in Modern Era

The Prosian Calendar remains the official civil and religious timekeeping system across Prose and its colonies. Alliance time (Terran Standard) is often displayed alongside Kastani notation aboard mixed-crew vessels such as the SS Scavenger DX-1017. Software aboard the Scavenger Fleet’s ships automatically converts between **Kastani** and **Terran** dates for logs and mission records.

Example Year Conversion

  • **Annuli 3429** (current series era) corresponds roughly to **Earth year 2672 CE**.
  • **Jenekti 15, Annuli 3429** – Shipboard observance of the Jenek Ezeel on the *Scavenger*.
