AS Mov'dna (Registry AS-2095) is an Alliance heavy command cruiser originally constructed as the experimental vessel ADF Vanguard. The ship is best known for surviving the Battle of Barnard, becoming the catalyst for major advances in Alliance phase defense technology, and later serving as one of the Alliance's principal command vessels.

History

ADF Vanguard

The ADF Vanguard was constructed as the Alliance's first operational test vessel for the continuous-operation Phase Drive. The ship incorporated numerous classified propulsion, structural, and sensor technologies intended to prove the viability of long-duration travel through phase space.

Unlike later production vessels, the Vanguard carried experimental propulsion hardware and lacked dedicated phase shielding, as no known civilization had yet demonstrated a practical phase weapon.

The vessel's hull was finished in matte black to reduce sensor visibility during classified trials.

Battle of Barnard

During operations near Barnard, the ADF Vanguard became the first Alliance capital ship attacked by the Tonan Phase Weapon.

Although the vessel remained structurally intact, the phase weapon penetrated the Vanguard's defensive systems, producing severe neurological effects among the crew. Human personnel were affected most severely, while the Prosian crew experienced considerably milder symptoms.

With much of the command staff incapacitated, the surviving Prosian officers assumed control of the ship and successfully returned the damaged vessel to Prose.

The battle demonstrated that conventional Alliance shielding provided little protection against coherent phase-based weapons.

Political Debate

Following the Vanguard's return, Alliance Fleet engineers concluded that restoring the experimental systems would cost nearly as much as constructing a new vessel.

The Alliance Fleet Board recommended that the ship be retired and scrapped.

The Prosian government strongly opposed the decision.

To the Prosians, the Vanguard represented the ship that had survived the Alliance's first encounter with the Tonan Phase Weapon and whose crew had preserved vital intelligence that would later prove essential to the Alliance war effort.

Rather than allow the vessel to be dismantled, Prose offered to finance a substantial portion of its reconstruction.

The Alliance Council accepted the proposal.

Reconstruction

The vessel underwent an extensive rebuild.

Major changes included:

  • Removal of all experimental propulsion hardware.
  • Installation of production-model Phase Drive systems.
  • Addition of modern multi-layer phase shielding.
  • Replacement of classified sensor equipment with fleet-standard systems.
  • Complete modernization of engineering and command facilities.
  • Hull refinforcements and internal structural upgrades.
  • Repainting from matte black to standard Alliance white and gray.

Although nearly every major system was replaced, the original hull and registry were retained.

The rebuilt vessel was recommissioned as:

AS Mov'dna

The registry AS-2095 remained unchanged.

Name

Mov'dna is a Prosian word meaning "Equalizer."

Among Prosians, the term refers to restoring balance after conflict rather than overwhelming an opponent.

The name was selected both because Prose had become a principal financial partner in the reconstruction and because the rebuilt vessel symbolized the restoration of balance following the Barnard disaster.

Legacy

The experience of the Vanguard directly influenced later Alliance naval doctrine.

Lessons learned from Barnard resulted in:

  • Development of dedicated phase shielding.
  • Improved phase resonance detection systems.
  • New medical protocols for phase exposure.
  • Structural changes to later Phase Drive vessels.
  • The long-standing Alliance practice of maintaining at least one predominantly Prosian capital ship in active service to ensure operational continuity should a phase weapon selectively incapacitate human crews.

Many historians regard the AS Mov'dna as the bridge between the Alliance's experimental Phase Drive era and the mature Phase Fleet that followed.

Later Service

Following recommissioning, the AS Mov'dna served as an Alliance heavy command cruiser.

Because the original Vanguard hull had been engineered for unusually high structural loads, naval architects later concluded that it possessed significant untapped performance potential.

Plans have periodically been proposed to modernize the vessel with Phase Whisker technology. Such a refit would require substantial reinforcement of the phase nacelle pylons to withstand the increased phase gradient loads encountered at higher operational velocities.

Technical Notes

The ship employs three primary Phase Drive nacelles.

Each nacelle consists of:

  • A forward cylindrical Phase Field Generator that establishes and maintains the ship's phase envelope.
  • A rear bulbous Repulsor Chamber that generates the force required to propel the vessel through phase space.

Unlike conventional reaction engines, the Repulsor Chamber does not produce exhaust. Instead, it acts upon the established phase field to propel the vessel through phase space.
