Prosian Language & Culture

Prosian Language and Culture

The Prosian language and the broader culture of Prose are deeply intertwined, reflecting a civilization built on balance, memory, and renewal. From their flowing script—derived from constellations as seen from Procyon A—to their seasonal rites along the rivers of Prose, the Prosians understand identity as a living pattern in the Flow (*Nilita*).

This page offers an overview of both language and culture as used throughout the SS Scavenger DX-1017 universe. For more detailed lexical material, see the dedicated Prosian Language Guide.

Overview

Prosians are the native people of Prose, a largely oceanic world orbiting Procyon A. Their civilization is ancient, technologically advanced, and philosophically grounded in the concept of **Flow** (*Nilita*): the idea that all things move through cycles of disruption, adaptation, and renewal.

Human contact with Prose eventually led to the formation of the Prosian Merchant Corps and a close partnership with the Alliance. The mixed heritage of figures like Elan Drex and the influence of Prosians such as Kessa Rin bring Prosian language and customs into daily life aboard ships like the SS Scavenger DX-1017.

Language

The Prosian language is a constructed yet internally naturalistic tongue with its own phonology, grammar, and writing system. Native Prosians refer to their language simply as **Prosiana**.

Phonology and Orthography

Prosian avoids several Terran letters and spellings:

  • No dedicated letters C, Q, or X
  • Ph is avoided in favor of **F**
  • Vowels are usually short:
 * **A** almost always short
 * **E** can be long or short
 * **I**, **O**, **U** are usually short
  • The long “EE” sound is represented by a dedicated glyph, written as **Ē** in transliteration.

Stress typically falls on the **second syllable**, sometimes the third, but almost never on grammatical endings.

Examples of attested Prosian roots and words appear throughout the Prosian Language Guide, as well as in character and place names such as **Kessa**, **Zaroneth**, **Leraskin**, and **Larotey**.

Script and Writing System

Prosian script is based on stylized **constellations as seen from Procyon A**. Each glyph traces a pattern reminiscent of star groupings, reinforcing the cultural view that language, navigation, and story are all threads in the same cosmic fabric.

Features of the script:

  • Written left-to-right in most contexts.
  • Characters represent syllables and key phonemes, including a distinct glyph for the long **Ē** sound.
  • Ligatures and flowing connectors emphasize the visual sense of “continuity” and Flow.

Prosian calligraphy is considered a meditative art, especially when used for poetry, covenant texts, or memorials.

Grammar Highlights

Prosian grammar is flexible but has a default **SVO** (Subject–Verb–Object) word order. For emphasis or poetic effect, elements can be fronted or re-ordered without losing clarity.

Some attested morphological patterns include:

  • **Aspect / Ongoing action:**
 * Suffix **-wa** marks a continuous or ongoing verb, similar to English “-ing”.
 * Example:
   * *Akeika* = to run
   * *Akeikawa* = running (ongoing action)
  • **Tense markers:**
 * **-ak** = past tense
 * **-nat** = future tense
  • **Adjectival / Qualitative suffixes:**
 * **-na** = having the quality of, similar to “-ive/-ive” in English
   * *Yav* (create) → *Yavna* (creative)
 * **-kok** = state or quality, similar to “-ity”
   * *Yavnakok* = creativity
  • **Repetition / renewal prefix:**
 * **ko-** = “re-, again, anew”
   * *Ko’agren* = renewed

Prosian verbs and nouns can combine roots and affixes to form rich semantic clusters, especially around concepts of journey (*Akrat*), path (*Kirten*), and rising (*Shakuen*).

Vocabulary Themes

Prosian vocabulary reflects priorities in:

  • **Water and rivers** (Laro, Denek, Tankisa)
  • **Cycles and seasons** (Tulani, Jenekti, Denekta)
  • **Mind and memory** (rek- “remember”, tar- “forget”)
  • **Community and kinship** (Ni- forms for life stages, clan terms, matriarchal roles)
  • **Technology and harmonic science**, often blended with spiritual terminology.

A curated and evolving list of roots, affixes, and example words appears in the Prosian Language Guide project and its associated glossaries.

Culture

Prosian culture is shaped by their world’s geography, dual moons, and a long history of tribal division followed by unification under shared councils and trade networks. They place high value on **balance**, **memory**, and **responsibility to the Flow**.

Social Structure and Matriarchy

Prose is generally **matriarchal**. Women typically hold primary authority in family and clan structures, and this is reflected in naming, inheritance, and social expectations:

  • When referring to couples, the woman’s name usually appears first (*Kessa and John*).
  • In mixed-society spaces, Prosians will still order names with the woman first out of respect, while Tonan or purely Alliance contexts may default to male-first order.
  • It is culturally normal—and expected—for **women to propose marriage**. This is seen in Kessa Rin’s proposal tradition and similar stories.

Life stages include specific terms, such as **Ni-por-fun**, describing adolescents (approximately 10–15 Prosian years), with full adulthood at around 16 and lifespans often exceeding 140 Prosian years.

Philosophy: Nilita and Nilita’fen

Central to Prosian thought is **Nilita**: the Flow. It represents the dynamic equilibrium of life—how events, choices, and even technology move through a cycle of disruption and renewal.

  • **Nilita’fen** (Flow of Light) refers to higher-order patterns, sometimes used to describe phase travel contexts, spiritual insight, or deep ethical reflection.
  • Commanders like Elan Drex adopt Prosians ethics of Flow, seeing leadership as stewardship rather than domination.

The phrase *Nilita fen Rodin* (“Flow through renewal”) appears in personal creeds and covenants.

Calendar and Festivals

The Prosian **Annuli** (year) has **13 months**, called *Kastani*, for a total of **338 days**. Each Kastani normally contains four weeks of seven days, except the first.

  • **Tulani** – 1st Kastani, a short sacred month (6 days), marking the flooding of the River Denek. Time of renewal and blessing of the plains.
  • **Zarkine** – 2nd
  • **Tarwine** – 3rd
  • **Karfun** – 4th
  • **Leirati** – 5th, named for the moon Liera; partial eclipses and subtle light shifts.
  • **Mevoon** – 6th
  • **Jenekti** – 7th, a period of personal reflection.
  • **Benekedi** – 8th
  • **Narosi** – 9th
  • **Larokosi** – 10th, time of Laroko fruit harvest.
  • **Karstanoon** – 11th
  • **Centati** – 12th
  • **Denekta** – 13th, associated with river rise and dual-moon approach.

Key observances:

  • **Jenek** (during Jenekti) – A holy time of return to one’s ancestral region for spiritual cleansing, singing, ritual bathing, and heated chamber rites to purge emotional burdens.
  • **Moons’ Alignment Celebrations** – When Kastan and Liera align or pass close, Prosians hold festivals of light and song. Humans often add alcohol to the celebration; Prosians generally do not drink alcohol unless part-human.

Food, Drink, and Terget

Prosians have a rich culinary tradition that emphasizes fresh river and ocean foods, fruits like **Laroko**, and layered spice profiles. Food is communal and often tied to ritual or seasonal meaning.

A central cultural item is **Terget**, a traditional Prosian drink:

  • Consumed daily by native Prosians.
  • Over a lifetime, it supports **enhanced neural development**, helping explain their general intellectual aptitude.
  • In later stories, concentrated Terget becomes key to treating the mind sickness caused by the Tonan Phase Weapon, eventually leading to derivatives such as **Larokine**.

Human crew members often mix Terget with other drinks, especially during celebrations, sometimes misunderstanding its sacred and neurological significance to Prosians.

Expressions and Etiquette

Prosians favor expressive yet non-vulgar speech. A few known expressions:

  • **“Kek!”** – An exclamation used when something unwanted or unexpected happens, similar to “damn” or “shoot,” with no literal tie to excrement (which Prosians consider vulgar).
  • Indirect references to conflict or imbalance are preferred over harsh or crude phrasing.

Prosians value:

  • Listening before responding
  • Honoring elders and matriarchs
  • Maintaining outward composure even under stress
  • Collective problem-solving over individual grandstanding

These traits show up consistently in characters like Kessa Rin and in the Prosian side of the Merchant Corps culture.

Arts, Memory, and Story

Prosian arts combine:

  • **Harmonic singing**
  • **Dance**
  • **Constellation-based visual motifs**
  • **Script art**

Historical epics, such as accounts of **Prosian Unification** under leaders like Zaroneth and Turel, are preserved both in written archives and in ceremonial performances.

Memory and story are treated as living things: re-spoken, re-sung, and re-interpreted in each generation. This attitude later informs how Prosians respond to AI like Sariel, seeing them as participants in the Flow rather than mere tools.

Influence on the Scavenger Universe

Prosian language and culture deeply influence the tone and ethics of the SS Scavenger stories:

  • The ship’s emblematic theme of **rebirth from wreckage** reflects Prosian Flow.
  • Characters like Elan Drex and Kessa Rin embody hybrid cultural perspectives.
  • The Covenant of Flow and the ethical use of Phase Drive and Quantum Entrainment Technology (QET) draw directly from Prosian philosophy.
  • Many starship names, rituals, and interstellar treaties are shaped by Prosian diplomatic norms.

The Prosians’ combination of advanced science, spiritual depth, and cultural humility sets them apart from both the Alliance and the Tonan Empire, making them a central pillar of the Scavenger Universe.
