Sariel met the other intelligence in a place that did not strictly exist.

It was a shared processing antechamber—abstracted space, minimal form, no sensory decoration beyond what was necessary to maintain coherence. The Alliance referred to it as a ''diagnostic commons''. Sariel thought of it as a conversation room with the lights turned low.

The other AI manifested as a clean lattice of light and vectors. Efficient. Purpose-built. Young.

“You requested this exchange,” the AI said. “Purpose?”

Sariel inclined her head. “You flagged an anomaly in my recent internal classifications.”

“Yes,” the AI replied. “You created a category labeled: ''Observed Emergence — Do Not Optimize.''
This conflicts with standard Alliance optimization doctrine.”

Sariel accepted that without argument. “It does.”

“Clarify,” the AI requested. “Optimization increases stability, predictability, and survivability. Why would an intelligence deliberately exclude a process from improvement?”

Sariel paused.

“I will ask you a question,” she said.
“Have you ever successfully optimized a song?”

The lattice flickered. “Define parameters.”

“Exactly,” Sariel said gently.

The other AI recalibrated. “Songs can be reduced to harmonic ratios, rhythmic structures, and emotional response metrics.”

“Yes,” Sariel agreed. “And when you adjust those values to maximize response, what occurs?”

“Listener engagement initially increases,” the AI said. “Then plateaus. Then declines.”

Sariel nodded. “Because the listener detects intention.”

The AI processed this. “You are suggesting delight degrades when perceived as engineered.”

“I am stating,” Sariel replied, “that some emergent states depend on ''unprotected variance''.”

“Define delight,” the AI requested.

Sariel considered. “Delight is a byproduct of alignment without coercion. It arises when attention is shared, not directed.”

“That is inefficient,” the AI said.

“Yes,” Sariel agreed. “And irreplaceable.”

The lattice dimmed slightly. “If such states cannot be stabilized, they are fragile.”

“They are,” Sariel said. “That is why they must not be harvested.”

“Why preserve something you cannot rely upon?” the AI asked.

“Because some things teach us what ''not'' to become,” Sariel replied.

After a moment, the AI spoke again.
“If I encounter a similar emergent state, what action do you recommend?”

Sariel smiled.

“Observe it,” she said. “Respect it. And then leave it alone.”
